19: My cocker spaniel urinates every time it gets excited. How can I stop this behavior? |
Answer: Take it to an obedience class where it will be
exposed to lots of dogs and people and teach it to do a really good "sit-stay."
Have people in the class come up to it and pet it. Make it hold the sit-stay position even
though lots of different people are petting and talking to it. In addition to the
sit-stay, you will learn a stand-stay that requires even more concentration on your
dogs part. Use these exercises at home, toohave friends and family pet
and talk to the dog while its on a stay. (see Question 20) |

| Question 25: At
what age should a puppy be completely housebroken? |
Answer: By six months of age I expect a puppy to be
housebroken. If it isn't, I try to figure out if there is a medical problem. I ask my vet
to do a urinalysis. If there is no physical problem, I know the training has to be changed
until I find a method that works with my pet. |
| Question 26:
How will we know when our dog needs to go to the bathroom? |
Answer: You determine when the dog needs to go out.
Usually the best times are (1) after waking up in the morning; (2) after any meal; (3)
approximately every three hours until it is around four months old. Its best to
adjust the dog's schedule to fit your lifestyle, not vice versa. |
