13. Keep Your Dog

When the vacation season approaches, I begin to think about one of the biggest pet problems we have in society. We discard animals we don’t want if we decide we don’t have time for them. It’s no longer a pleasure, but a nuisance to have the pet. All of a sudden, we’re confronted with trips and loads of activities and stress.

We don’t want to pay to board an animal that we don’t want to take with us. It’s not trained to behave around company, and we have no good place to confine it. So let’s remove the stress and get rid of the animal; find it a good home. Take it to one of the organizations and dump it off, or take it out to the country and let it out. Someone will come along and rescue it, and it will live in the country and have puppies and live happily ever after.

Face reality! This is not what happens and deep down inside you know it. You really love animals. It’s just a bad time for you right now. The animal would be happier with someone else.

This is the same sweet, dog that goes insane with joy when you come home from work or when you scratch its tummy while you watch TV. Let’s face it––it’s not the animal that’s got the problem. You just don’t love it enough to save its life. It’s disposable.

I hope for your sake the people you care for most in this world don’t one day decide that you’re not as much fun as you used to be or that they don’t want to be with you any more and dump you. But if such a thing should happen, you can at least start over and make another life for yourself. Your pet can’t.

Don’t join the ranks of the animal killers. Be an adult and take care of that pet you once fell in love with.
