5. Should I Adopt from a Rescue Organization?

The wonderful thing about rescue organizations is that they work so hard to match the right dog with the right owner. This simplifies training. Most of the dogs are old enough to be past most housebreaking problems and have established a personality. By that I mean it’s easier to deal with a dog when you have a clear picture of what its problems are. With puppies, you build the personality. Older dogs have been disciplined for most of the basic behaviors that people don’t like. The most common problem is working to make the rescued dog trust you, and it’s fun to see them relax and start to fit into your family’s routine. It is so very rewarding to see these dogs respond to love and patience and training. Try it.

The Adopted Animal

Life is full of new beginnings––exciting things happen to us that we remember forever. When we are children, it’s a new pair of shoes that we can’t wait to wear; then we get that first bike, and later, a car of our own! The best of all is getting a new dog, and we are never too old to be excited about it. For those of us who remember our first bike, it doesn’t really matter that it wasn’t brand new, but fixed up; what was a discard for someone else became a treasure for us.

The same can apply to a dog that has been a discard for someone else––it can become our treasure if we know how to fix it up and repair the damage inflicted by the previous owner.
