19. Scolding
(Negative Talk)

Whether you’re communicating with a human or with an animal, it really doesn’t solve any problems if you yell or demean the one you’re speaking to. It makes you feel bad afterwards and, to a dog, it seems as if you don’t like them or you want to fight. Neither of these is true. We all like our dogs or we wouldn’t keep them, and wanting to fight with someone that has sharp teeth is not a good idea. Getting angry with a dog because it is acting like a dog is about as productive as getting angry with a human baby for soiling its diaper. What’s the point?

Another disadvantage is that the small children in your family will begin to mimic your method of communication with your dog. It is really disturbing to hear small children yelling, "Shut up," or "Bad Dog," or "No, no," every time they see the dog. It’s a much better approach to talk happy and train the dog without such aggressive talk. It teaches children a better way to relate to not only animals, but humans as well.
