14. Ten Basic Commands a Dog Needs to Learn

Definition

  1. "Stop" or "AT"    Whatever you’re doing, quit doing it right away. (Takes the place of "no.")
  2. "Come" (Report)   Wherever you are, run to me in a hurry.
  3. "Outside"   Go out the door into the yard (Figure 1).
  4. "Get in the House"   Go into the house whether you’re in the front or the back yard (Figure 2).
  5. "Stay"   Don’t move from that spot; you don’t have to sit or lie down, just remain where you are (Figure 3).
  6. "Sit"    Sit right away, even if you’re far away from me (i.e., across the street) (Figure 4).
  7. "Wait"   Not a stay command; it just means don’t keep going. Hold still for just a second. (Getting out of the car or going through doors with people.) It keeps accidents from happening (Figures 5 & 6).
  8. "Go On"   Go away from me. (Handy when you are petting one dog and another comes up and tries to interfere or compete for your attention.) (Figure 7).
  9. "Release"   Not really a command; it just means, "at ease, you can relax." I Use this to let a dog get out of a stay position.
  10. "Heel"   Walk next to me, and don’t pull on the leash. Stop every time I stop, and start walking when I start (Figure 8).
